Germany’s struggling economy needs urgent action to boost its competitiveness, Deutsche Bank’s DBKGd.DE CEO said on Wednesday as he called for structural reforms, less regulation and lower taxes on companies. “Germany needs to adjust its business model,” Christian Sewing told the FT Global Banking Summit in London. “It is urgent we take action,” he said, flagging the likelihood of further job losses in Germany’s auto industry and adding that February’s snap election could provide the opportunity for a reset. The German economy has been dogged by intensifying competition from abroad, weak demand and an industrial slowdown. To boot, a budget row brought down the country’s three-way coalition last month, leaving Europe’s largest economy in political limbo until a snap election on Feb. 23. The OECD on Wednesday cut its forecast for German economic growth next year. Sewing, who has headed Deutsche Bank since 2018, said via video that the company would invest 2 billion euros ($2.1 billion) annually to increase automation as it tries to keep a lid on costs and improve its technology. Deutsche’s 2010 acquisition of Postbank resulted in glitches that locked customers out of their accounts, and a long-running tech integration only concluded last year. The Frankfurt-based lender has seen its shares gain 35% in 2024, outperforming a European banking index .SX7P, after a run of quarterly profits and a rebound in its investment banking business. But its stock remains below levels hit after the global financial crisis in 2008-2009, and the lender has forecast higher bad loan provisions as the domestic economy weakens. Deutsche’s rival Commerzbank CBKG.DE has been at the centre of speculation about a return of European banking consolidation after Italy’s UniCredit CRDI.MI snapped up a stake, triggering widespread opposition in Germany to any hostile takeover. Sewing said his lender was “staying out” of the Commerzbank-UniCredit situation and was focused solely on itself, given Deutsche had “only actually seen 60% to 65% of our potential”. Banking consolidation in Europe was “a logical trend”, he said, but the lack of a banking union remained a hindrance to dealmaking. “I do believe before the real wave starts we need further foundations met,” he said, adding it remained “very hard” for Deutsche Bank to shift liquidity from one country to another in Europe despite being in 14-15 markets. Bankers have repeatedly called for euro zone-wide capital and deposit rules to replace national requirements. In one of the wildest finishes to a game in NFL history, the Dallas Cowboys used two kickoff returns for touchdowns in the final 2:49 to upset the Washington Commanders, 34-26. It felt like the Cowboys won this game three times and tried to lose it just as many. It's the biggest upset in the league this season, as Dallas was a 10.5-point underdog. ... while also taking some obvious steps toward tanking its way to a better pick in the April NFL Draft. But then the game got in the way of that plan ... Our Top 10 observations on the wackiest game in franchise history: 10. TOP 10 EDIT: And to think, this game was a 3-3 snoozefest at halftime. Not sure exactly where this unpredictable, amazing, history-making fourth quarter belongs in the annals of Cowboys-Commanders history , but it's got to wedge itself in there somewhere right? The last eight minutes were a heck of a football game in itself, featuring 41 points, a 99-yard kickoff return, an 86-yard touchdown pass, a two-point conversion, a missed extra point, an onside kick returned for a touchdown and a Commanders' Hail Mary intercepted by Israel Mukuamu to finally end it. Whew. 9. ONE OF THE AGES: This was the first game in NFL history to feature two kickoff returns to touchdown, two missed extra points and a blocked punt. It was an absolute cornucopia of dramatic plays both spectacular and down right stupid. 8. NOT-SEE TV: Let's admit it, the first half was wholly unwatchable. The Cowboys had a dropped pass by Jalen Tolbert on third down, a blocked field goal, a missed field goal by Brandon Aubrey, a fumble by Rico Dowdle, a shotgun snap that sailed over Cooper Rush's head and a punt blocked. Despite that comedy of errors, somehow it was 3-3 at the break. The Commanders should be embarrassed. And ultimately, they were. 7. FINAL, FATAL FLAW: In a loosey-goosey game that both teams made more than their share of mistakes to lose, the Commanders wound up making the biggest. After pulling within 27-26 with 21 seconds remaining, kicker Austin Seibert hooked the extra point wide left after a low snap. Seibert, who missed the last two games with a hip injury, missed two PATs after not missing one all season. The Cowboys had laughably bad coverage on Terry McLaurin's 86-yard touchdown pass and, yes, Juanyeh Thomas should have just fallen down after recovering an onside kickoff that would have ended the game. But in a game of top this, it was a simple extra point that sealed the shocker. 6. SEE CEEDE: For a guy roundly criticized for his seemingly negative body language, CeeDee Lamb sure looked like he wanted to have a positive impact on this game. He caught 10 passes for 67 yards, but it was his hustle play at the end of the first half that stood out. After Noah Igbinoghene picked off Rush and began running deep in Dallas territory in the last minute of the first half, Lamb sprinted back and made a tackle that jarred the ball loose. Hunter Luepke caught the ball out of the air and three plays later the Cowboys kicked a field goal for a halftime tie. 5. WACKY WIN: Still not sure how the Cowboys won this game on the road against a 7-4 team. They ... allowed 412 yards of offense, coughed up an 86-yard touchdown pass while trying to protect a seven-point lead with 30 seconds remaining, had a punt blocked, had a field goal blocked and missed a field goal. Given those elements - plus Dak Prescott not in uniform - the degree of difficulty was off the charts. Related: Cowboys’ Opening Drives End in Double Disaster 4. BUSTED GUYTON?: It's too early call Cowboys' first-round draft choice Tyler Guyton a complete bust, or is it? The rookie was called for four penalties including an illegal formation that negated a 23-yard completion to CeeDee Lamb. ... and he was eventually, to our eyes, benched. 3. UNSPECIAL TEAMS: Nothing like a blocked punt, blocked field goal, missed field goal and short kickoff that gift-wrapped the Commanders field position at their 40-yard line to start the second half. Not sure if Bones Fassel has endured a worse day as the Cowboys' special teams coach. Until ... 2. KAVONTAE KRAZY!: In a game that featured a season's worth of wacky, there was nothing crazier than KaVontae Turpin's touchdown return. With Washington having just scored and converted a two-point conversion to pull within 20-17, Turpin let the kickoff bounce and awkwardly go between his legs. He eventually picked the ball - with one hand, mind you - at the 1-yard line. From there he sort of slow-walked to the 10, where he made a remarkable spin move and then hit high gear in no time to ultimately go untouched 99 yards for a touchdown. It was the Cowboys' first kickoff return in 50 games. Par for the course on this zany day, they'd get another one from Thomas 2:35 later. 1. RARE RIVALRY: This shocking outcome - Washington was favored by 10.5 points - had all the feel of 1989. In that season, the lowly Cowboys went 1-15 with their only win in Washington ... in November ... using a backup quarterback. Sunday it was Rush ending Dallas' five-game losing streak; 35 years ago it was Steve Walsh leading a 13-3 upset. And in the end? Organic Tanking will have to wait. According to reports, the victim had extended a live wire near his bed to charge his mobile phone before going to sleep. During the night, he came into contact with the wire and suffered a severe electric shock. He was initially taken to a private hospital and later transferred to a government facility, where he passed away during treatment. With the rising number of electrocution incidents leading to more fatalities, here are some precautions you can take to avoid such incidents.A year ago seems like an eternity. Imagine how that feels for the Buffalo Bills. Heading into Week 13 last season, the Bills were on their bye. They lost an overtime game to the Philadelphia Eagles after blowing a fourth-quarter lead and another in overtime to fall to 6-6. A playoff berth seemed unlikely and an AFC East championship unfathomable sitting three games behind the Miami Dolphins. And then, of course, the Bills rattled off five consecutive wins to secure their fourth divisional title in a row and the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. Jump ahead to the present and the Bills enter Week 13 coming out of their bye, a 9-2 record and a four-game lead on the Dolphins. This was supposed to be the year the Bills were finally knocked off their throne, but instead, they are a win from clinching a playoff spot and a win and a Dolphins loss from another AFC East banner. While the Bills won’t need to win six in a row to get into the playoffs this time around, they might in order to get home-field advantage and the Dolphins are not quite out of the race for the division yet. This is the time to keep their foot on the gas to avoid any chance of a role reversal. A three-game stretch against the 49ers, Rams and Lions that once seemed to be daunting doesn’t look so tough on paper anymore, but it’s still crucial to come out 2-1. And then there’s the three-game homestretch against the Jets and Patriots (twice). Laugh at the final three games if you will, but the Bills lost to both teams last season and 14 of 27 games within the division have been decided by one score since 2020. And three of their five losses in the AFC East during that span have come against teams that finished below .500. “What we talk about is making sure their habits match our goals as a team and certainly their goals as an individual to be the best version of themselves when they come back,” Bills coach Sean McDermott said. “We're getting into the back third of the season, if you will. ... It's an important time for sure.” If there is a team to avoid a slump, though, it’s the Bills and McDermott is 7-0 coming off a bye week since becoming the team’s head coach in 2017. And by time the Bills kickoff against the 49ers Sunday, the calendar will have flipped to December and that’s when they shine. McDermott’s first three seasons were a slog in December and January, going 6-8. But since 2020, the Bills are 19-2 in those months and outscored opponents by 11.8 points per game. Some of the late-season success is because the Bills fell into precarious situations in the first half. The Bills went 3-2 in the final month and still needed help to squeak into the playoffs in 2017, then they were 7-6 and trailing the Patriots 13 games into 2021, and then, of course, last season’s run to the finish line. Avoiding a drop-off over the final six games is promising for the same reasons that Bills unexpectedly already have nine wins. This is not a roster laden with stars, but one with many players who battled for jobs during training camp, are still battling and will likely have to do so again next year. The Bills have also fostered an environment where goals and expectations are clear. And the Bills have gone out and acquired players to fit into their mold through the draft, free agency and trades. “Last time I checked, nine wins probably doesn't get you in the playoffs,” quarterback Josh Allen said after beating the Chiefs. “So going into this bye week, get to enjoy ourselves a little bit. But coming back ready. You know, a hungry team.” The Bills may also be coming back a healthier team. Tackle Spencer Brown (ankle), receiver Keon Coleman (wrist) and tight end Dalton Kincaid (knee) were not expected to be out long-term and all could return against the 49ers. Receiver Amari Cooper returned against the Chiefs and played with a cast on his left wrist, so another two weeks of rest can only help him. The Bills can open rookie defensive tackle DeWayne Carter’s (wrist) 21-day window to return from injured reserve Saturday, while the Bills expect defensive end Dawuane Smoot (wrist) back before the end of the season. And then there’s the big fish: linebacker Matt Milano. The All-Pro could make his season debut against the 49ers, but they could sit him one more game before having to decide whether to add him to the active roster or shut him down for the year, which has to be determined after the game. What Milano can bring to the Bills at this juncture of the season is unknown, especially for a 30-year-old who hasn’t played a football game in 13 months. Not only is Milano recovering from biceps surgery, but he hasn’t played a game since fracturing his leg in Week 5 last season, although adding Milano to the mix can’t hurt. “We would want to do it,” McDermott said. “If and when we're given the green light — or he's given the green light — to go about it the right way.”
